Amanita phalloides (death cap mushroom)
- Pathophysiology
- α-amanitin: blocks RNA polymerase → inhibition of mRNA transcription and protein synthesis → apoptosis
- Clinical features
- After 6–24 hours: gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps) that resolve 24–36 hours after ingestion
- After 2–4 days: renal and liver failure
- Ingestion of a single cap may be lethal
