- Broca area in inferior frontal gyrus of frontal lobe. Associated with defective language production, aka expressive aphasia. Patients appear frustrated, insight intact.
Mnemonic
Think of a pull string doll that will talk when you pull on its string. If this becomes Broca (broken), then the doll won’t talk.
- Wernicke area in superior temporal gyrus of temporal lobe. Associated with impaired language comprehension. Patients do not have insight.
Mnemonic
Someone with Wernicke’s aphasia can still be quite Wer-dy.
- The arcuate fasciculus connects Wernicke’s area to Broca’s area. Damage to the arcuate fasciculus results in a conduction aphasia.
Mnemonic
Without an accurate fasciculus, you cannot accurately repeat what someone just said.
- Global aphasia: Broca and Wernicke areas affected.
