Epidemiology


  • Most common in females 20–50 years old.

Clinical features


  • Widespread musculoskeletal pain
  • Morning stiffness (Typically lasts < 60 minutes)
  • Fatigue
  • Impaired attention & concentration
  • Psychiatric disturbances (eg, depression, anxiety)
  • Symptoms lasting for ≥ 3 months
  • Physical examination
    • Multiple tender points at characteristic locations
    • Absence of joint or muscle inflammation

Diagnostics


Normal acute phase reactants (eg, ESR, CRP) & other inflammatory markers

Treatment


  • Progressive exercise regimen
  • Medications: tricyclic antidepressants, cyclic skeletal muscle relaxants, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors
